TheVR gaming headset Oculus Quest is getting a new name next year. As Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is its parent company, Mark Zuckerberg decided to rebrand Oculus Quest as Meta Quest. The announcement came during the same time Facebook announced to change their company name to Meta.

Facebook Company is Now Called Meta

On October 28, 2021, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced to rename The Facebook Company as "Meta." The decision to rebrand the company is for the name to reflect the company's focus goal for the future. Their goal is to help people connect, find communities, and grow their businesses in the metaverse.

According to Zuckerberg, the metaverse they are creating will expand into three dimensions and be projected into the physical world. The company dreams of creating a virtual reality space where users can share immersive experiences with other people anytime, wherever they are, anywhere in the world.

The company also believes that the metaverse will eventually encompass entertainment, work, and everything in between. And similar to mobile devices today, the metaverse platform needs to be flexible enough to accommodate all the users.

Oculus and Facebook

One of Meta's main projects is to further develop their VR technology to build the metaverse they dream of. This makes Oculus and their VR gaming headsets a vital part of the metaverse project.

Oculus started back in July 2012 with a Kickstarter campaign featuring the Rift VR headset designed for gaming. The campaign was a success, and in 2014, Facebook acquired Oculus.

Under the Facebook company, Oculus VR gaming headsets and their products have been integrated with its social networking platform. Since October 2020, all new users and any user of Facebook VR hardware released after Meta Quest 2 must log in using their Facebook account to use the headset.

Following Zuckerberg's announcement, Meta's VP of AR/VR, Andrew Bosworth, soon shared more details about the company's rebrand. Another branch of the company known as Oculus Research was rebranded from Facebook Reality Labs to simply Reality Labs.

The Oculus brand name will soon change as well. Starting in early 2022, users will see the Oculus Quest from Facebook shift to Meta Quest. And the Oculus App will also be updated to Meta Quest App over time.

Furthermore, Bosworth confirmed that rebranding Oculus was very difficult to make. The development team has a solid attachment to the Oculus brand name. But despite the changes of the brand, Bosworth assured the users that the name "Oculus" would continue to become a core part of their build. And that the name "Oculus" will be used in things that the team will develop in the feature, such as software and developer tools.

Aside from the rebrand of Oculus Quest to Meta, the company also announced its plans to disable the need for a Facebook account to use its VR headsets.

Meta's Project Cambria

The Meta Company also released a few details about their next-generation, all-in-one VR hardware called Project Cambria. This new high-end VR gaming gear will launch in 2022.

The development team also confirmed that Project Cambria is not a replacement for Quest 2. And it is not related to the Quest 3.

According toFB Tech, Project Cambria is a high-end device that will come at a higher price. But this is because it is packed with all the latest advanced technologies. Some of its features include color Passthrough, social presence, pancake optics, and a lot more.

Project Cambria is being developed for people who want to start testing a new kind of computing. It will also be an important part of Meta's plan to further introduce its users to the metaverse world.

Meta Presence Platform

Another critical software that Meta is currently developing is the Presence Platform. It has a suite of AI and machine perception capabilities.

These features include advanced technologies such as Spatial Anchors, Scene Understanding, and Pass-Through. These technologies allow developers to build a more realistic mixed reality, interaction, and voice experience. These experiences can seamlessly blend the virtual content with the physical world.

Here are two features included in the Presence Platform:

  • Interaction SDK will make it easier for developers to add high-quality hand interactions to their apps. This is made possible by Meta providing a library of common gestures.
  • Voice SDK will allow users to use their voice as an intuitive input method.

  • These two SDK apps will be released next year and available on Oculus Store and the App Lab. Aside from the development of these Software Design Kits, Meta is further developing and working on technologies like Spatial Anchors and Scene Understanding Capabilities.

As Zuckerberg puts it, the metaverse is a space in the virtual world where users will be able to do almost anything. Using this virtual space, they will get together with their friends and family online wherever they are. The metaverse will serve as a creative playground for everyone from playing, learning, shopping, or working.

And with the help of the developing AR/VR technology, Meta has a goal of bringing 1 billion people into the metaverse before the decade ends. But for now, the company hopes that changing its name will arouse people's curiosity to further learn more about the metaverse.
